American Andy Newell, capping his best season of World Cup racing, was 13th Wednesday in a sprint around the Royal Palace. It was the final World Cup sprint of the season, lifting him into sixth place in the sprint standings.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — American Andy Newell, capping his best season of World Cup racing, was 13th Wednesday in a sprint around the Royal Palace. It was the final World Cup sprint of the season, lifting him into sixth place in the sprint standings.
    Newell finished no lower than 14th in any of the eight sprints this winter, giving him the highest sprint standing of any U.S. skier since the sprints were added to the World Cup in the 1996 season.
    Jens Arne Svartedal of Norway clinched the sprint season title despite finishing last in the Royal Palace Sprint B final.
    Skiing on an illuminated 1-kilometer course around one of the world’s biggest royal palaces in Stockholm’s Old Town, Mickail Deviatiarov of Russia won the men’s classic-style race ahead of Sweden’s Emil Jonsson. American Torin Koos finished 29th and was 19th for the season.
    Tobias Angerer, the two-time defending World Cup champion from Germany, did not compete. He clinched the men’s overall title last week in Norway.
    Petra Majdic of Slovenia won the women’s race ahead of Finland’s Virpi Kuitunen, who clinched the World Cup overall title two weeks ago. American Kikkan Randall was 30th, finishing the season 12th in sprint points.
    The World Cup season ends in Falun, the hotbed of cross-country skiing in Sweden, this weekend.The final World Cup cross-country races are Saturday — the men’s 30 km (15+15) and the women’s 20 km (10+10) — during the Swedish Ski Games in Falun.
