Stutz wins slalom, Goldberg overall Nor Am titles

The men wrapped up their half of the Nor Am Tour with a pair of slaloms on a new course at Calgary’s Canada Olympic Park on the outskirts of the Stampede City. Despite a fall in the final slalom, Paul Stutz had enough points accumulated during the season to hold on for the slalom crown. Stutz won both slalom tests in Vail in February and also won at Panorama in December.

The first of the two final slaloms went to Colby Granstrom with Canada’s number one slalom skier, Michael Janyk in second and Julien Cousineau third. Norwegian Jonathan Nordbotten, a collegiate racer from the University of Vermont, got the Sunday won over Janyk with Will Brandenburg in the third spot.

The result in the slalom standings was a 368-320 margin for Stutz over Janyk. Nordbotten finished third with 299 and Granstrom fourth at 262. Philip Brown was just two points back in fourth.

Stutz said the season had gone just about the way he had hoped it would. “It was a goal of mine for the season,” he said. “All in all I’m really happy with how the season ended here.”

Goldberg collected the overall Nor Am title, scoring in every discipline across the season, besting Brown 1069-903 for the honor. He also claimed the downhill title. Brown won the GS title. Number three overall was the super G and combined champion Morgan Pridy. Canada notched five of the top six placings overall among men.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
