German Nordic Combiner Johannes Rydzek, an 18-year-old German from SC Oberstdorf, made an impressive name for himself this past weekend as the FIS Summer Grand Prix of nordic combined got underway in his home country. With a first and second place over the weekend against a top notch field Rydzek, coached by the legendary German trainer, Hermann Weinbuch, showed he is currently on form in the combined arena. He had a second place finish to teammate Eric Frenzel on Aug. 7, and took the outright victory on Aug. 8, besting the likes of Frenchman Francois Braud and Finland’s Janne Ryynaenen.

American nordic combined skiers were represented by Brett Camerota who finished ninth and 39th in the two days of competition. Taylor Fletcher was just out of points with a finish of 31st place in one event and was 29th in the other event. Brother Brian Fletcher had a 23rd and 19th place on the weekend.

The USA squad has now traveled to Klingenthal, GER for training, to be followed by a pair of events in Oberwiesenthal, GER this coming Friday and Saturday.  –Peter Graves
