Tango at Tahoe to benefit region’s racing clubs{mosimage}Olympic skiers, gastronomic delights and plenty of prizes highlight the Tango at Tahoe benefit on Sunday, Aug. 22. Hosted by the Lake Tahoe Ski Club Foundation, the 11th annual fiesta features Osvaldo Ancinas’s authentic Argentine lamb Asado, as well as performances by the internationally recognized Tango dancers Pampa Cortes and Vileria.

Also showcased are foods from Christy Hill, Wolfdale’s, Graham’s, Jake’s on The Lake and many other notable North Shore restaurants. A giant raffle and silent and live auction add to the festivities.

In attendance will be Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso and other current and past Olympians, national team skiers and Far West alpine competitors. Several Lake Tahoe ski racers will receive awards for their 2005 achievements.

Proceeds benefit the Lake Tahoe Ski Club Foundation. Few ski clubs in North
America have left their mark on the history of U.S. skiing as the Lake Tahoe Ski Club. It was during the winter of 1928 that residents of Tahoe City met on the second floor of the Community Building and formed a winter sports club that would open up and propagate Lake Tahoe as a winter destination. Within two years, the club hosted the United States Olympic tryouts for the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Games.

Since then, the club, now under the aegis of the Lake Tahoe Ski Club Foundation, has placed more than 60 members onto the U.S. alpine ski team. Several of its members, such as Lars and Anders Haugen, Greg Jones and Jimmie Heuga, are in the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame. Others, such as recently retired world champion Daron Rahlves, are soon to be inducted.

The nonprofit organization, consisting of alpine ski teams from Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Diamond Peak, Sugar Bowl, Auburn and Northstar, helps support
junior ski racers in training, traveling and competition.

The fun begins at 1 p.m. at the beautiful lakefront Quist residence in Tahoe City. For more information and reservations, call 530-581-4001 or 583-6418.
