TORINO: Alpine: Weather halts women’s super G ; moved to noon MondaySAN SICARIO, Italy – The women’s Olympic super G was postponed until noon Monday because of weather.

A heavy snow fell and fog descended on San Sicario’s ski slopes Sunday, limiting visibility and making it difficult for workers to keep the course clear.

The postponement was the latest in a series of weather-related disruptions of the alpine skiing schedule. The downhill portion of the women’s combined was postponed for a day before being completed Saturday, and the men’s super G was rerun after 17 skiers had raced earlier in the day.

The U.S. women, as with all the racers, waited out the delay at the top of the mountain awaiting the start. They had inspected the course on schedule. After the cancellation, the athletes skied or took the gondola back to the Olympic athletes’ village in Sestriere.

“It’s always frustrating when you’re ready to race and the weather rolls in,” said U.S. Ski Team Alpine Director Jesse Hunt. “We had everyone at the start, we were ready to ski and then fog rolled in on the lower part of the course. It is impossible to run it. Visibility wasn’t adequate to start the race. It wasn’t safe.

“The athletes will go back and do a little dryland (training) to stay loose and wait to hear what the plan is to race the super G.”
