FAR WEST SKIING, the nonprofit organization representing more than 1,000 junior ski racers throughout California and Nevada, will host its fifth annual Fall Gala and Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Mount Judah Day Lodge at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort.
Former world champion and Tahoe junior racer Daron Rahlves is expected to attend, having recently retired from a storied career with the U.S. Ski Team.
"Although Daron is a great ambassador for this region’s junior ski racing, he’s never been around this time of year to attend our biggest fundraiser of the year," said Greg Murtha, Sugar Bowl’s director of marketing and sales, gala organizer and a member of the Far West board of directors. "With his recent retirement, he is spending more time at his home in Truckee, and we’re delighted he has agreed to visit with the many athletes, families and guests who annually donate to support junior ski racing by joining us at this festive season kickoff."
Gala highlights include a variety of excellent food from several ski resorts and restaurants around the lake, plus an assortment of the region’s best brews and wines.
"The food and spirits alone are worth the price of admission, as attendees always rave about the quality and quantity from our terrific resort sponsors and local business supporters," Far West President Tim Cohee said.
A live and silent auction will be held throughout the evening, featuring thousands of dollars in top-of-the-line ski gear and accessories, as well as major live auction items including a California Skiing Gold Pass, Ski Lake Tahoe 8 Packs, a Sugarwood Pass and much more.
In addition to Rahlves, several former Olympians who reside in the Tahoe area are expected to attend.
"It’s a great time for everyone and a positive way to kick off the coming junior racing season," Cohee said.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and younger and may be purchased in advance by contacting Desiree Walker at the Far West Skiing office, 775 -345-6333 or desiree@fwskiing.org. Tickets will also be available at the door the evening of the event beginning at 5:30 p.m.
