Val Gardena: Guay wins trainer, Lanning third

The first training run on the Saslong, the course at the traditional World Cup stop of Val Gardena was just what the U.S. team wanted to see: four guys packed into the top 15.

Canadian Eric Guay, off to a strong start to the season with four top 10 results in four races, was fastest on the day, nearly a half second faster than last season’s winner Michael Walchhofer of Austria. In third was TJ Lanning, on something of a tear himself with his best two career DH results coming already this season.

In third was TJ Lanning, on something of a tear himself with his best two career DH results coming already this season.

“The course was as smooth as I’ve ever skied it,” said Lanning. “This track is perfectly prepared – so buttery – the jumps are perfect too. I’m pretty stoked with the way I’m skiing right now, but I’m not going to take it for granted. I can definitely improve on today.”

“I’ve never raced here where I haven’t been tired in the finish. Today, i just wanted to keep racing. The track is so sweet.”

The resurgent Hermann Maier was fourth, Frenchman Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin was fifth and Bode Miller sixth. Marco Sullivan, fourth at Val Gardena two seasons ago, was 11th and Scott Macartney, on the podium here a season ago, finished 14th.
