CANADA'S STEFAN GUAY sustained an injury to his right knee Wednesday during a downhill training run in Val Gardena, Italy, while preparing for the upcoming World Cup speed races.
A team doctor reported that the injury initially appeared to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Guay was airlifted by helicopter to a local hospital in Bolzano.
In the days to come, the skier from Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, will be transported back to Canada to London, Ontario, where he will be examined by Dr. Rob Litchfield.
“It is very unfortunate to see an athlete the caliber of Stefan get injured in preparation for Friday’s super G race. Unfortunately, these type of injuries are too common in our sport,” said Max Gartner, Alpine Canada Alpin chief athletics officer.
“We are confident that with his determination and intensity, Stefan will be back in top shape next season to compete on the World Cup tour. Our medical team will make every necessary step to ensure his knee is fully rehabilitated.”
A member of the Canadian ski team since 2004, Guay most recently captured back-to-back gold medals in downhill at the Northwest Mutual Funds Nor-Am Cup races in Lake Louise. Guay also finished 25th in last month’s World Cup super G at Lake Louise. He has raced in a total of six World Cup races in his career.
Last season, Guay won the gold medal in giant slalom as well as the bronze medal in downhill at the World Junior Championships in Mont Ste-Anne, Québec.
