Weather delays World Cup ski cross opener

Heavy snow forced the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled World Cup ski cross competition in Les Contamines, France. The season-opening meet is now slated for Sunday.
A total of 25 centimeters of snow fell through the night and into the day making race conditions difficult and unfair for the field. A qualifying run was held, with Austria’s Karin Huttary leading the women’s field and Michael Schmid of Switzerland leading the men’s field.
“The amount of snow that fell on the track made it too difficult for the volunteers to clear and as a result the track was reduced to one lane making it impossible for competitors to pass one another,” said Canadian team head coach Eric Archer. “The upshot is that they are calling for better weather tomorrow with partly cloudy skis in the morning and sunshine in the afternoon.”
The top Canadian in men’s qualifying was Davey Barr in fifth place. A pair of Americans, Casey Puckett and Jakub Fiala, finished second and third, respectively, with Czech Tomas Kraus fourth.
