WJC – Zeller ousts defending champ for GS gold

By Published On: February 22nd, 2013Comments Off on WJC – Zeller ousts defending champ for GS gold

There wasn’t much crowd at the finish, up the hill from the base of Mont Ste Anne, but there was a joyous cheer from her Austrian teammates Friday (Feb. 22) when Lisa-Marie Zeller finished ahead of the defending gold medalist to win the GS at the World Junior Championships.

Zeller overtook Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway, not only the defending gold medalist, but also the first run leader. The bronze medal went to Romane Miradoli of France. Adeline Baud, also of France and the bronze medal winner of the slalom, had said she expected to better in the GS but struggled in the second run and finished fourth.

Conditions were much improved at Mont Ste Anne. After workers spent the night  clearing a meter of  fresh snow off the track overnight, Friday’s GS held up well enough to allow skiers from well down the start order to claim strong finishes. Maryna Gasienica Daniel of Poland posted fifth from the 36th start, Slovak Petra Vlhova was eighth from the 58th start and her teammate Barbara Kanorova ninth from the 35th start. All told five skiers starting further back than bib 40 finished in the top 20.

“It’s really a surprise for me because I wasn’t expecting to do a podium here. It was hard because the snow was bumpy, but I didn’t stop me.” said Zeller, a huge smile displaying her pleasure at the win.

Mowinckel said she was happy with the silver medal. “Of course I prefer to be on the first step of the podium,” said Mowinckel, “but I’m satisfied with my result. I am participating in all the disciplines so I will do my best to go back on the podium.”

Miradoli said she would turn her focus to the super G, though she had not seen the track and was looking forward to a preview after tomorrow’s men’s downhill.

Lila Lapanja was the top American skier of the day with a 38th place finish. Canada’s Mikaela Tommy was tops for the hosts in 30th.

After two cancelations the men finally got in a downhill training run at nearby Le Massif. Thomas Mayrpeter of Austria was fastest with a narrow lead over Valentin Giraud Moine or France. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway was third nearly a second behind Mayrpeter.

The Canadians fared better in the speed training with William Schuessler Bedard and Chris Steinke posting the sixth and seventh fastest times. Bryce Bennett led the American group in ninth with Samuel DuPratt in 11th.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
