American Travis Ganong was third-fastest in men’s downhill training Monday at the 2007 FIS Alpine World Junior Championships.
ZAUCHENSEE, Austria — American Travis Ganong was third-fastest in men’s downhill training Monday at the 2007 FIS Alpine World Junior Championships.
    On the WC Strecke course, Ganong trailed only two Austrians — leader Joachin Puchner in 1 minute, 41.07 seconds and second-place finisher Marco Fuchs in 1:41.76. Ganong completed his run in 1:42.01, .94 back of the leader. Five of the top nine men’s racers were Austrians.
    Other Americans were Bump Heldman in 17th, Mark Mikos in 38th, Will Brandenburg in 43rd, Jacob Lund in 75th, Tommy Ford in 79th and Max Hammer in 94th.
    Travis Dawson paced the Canadians in 31st, with Philippe Crete Belzile 45th and Benjamin Thomsen 49th.
    Germany’s Gina Stechert led the women in training with a time of 1:41.97, .07 faster than Liechenstein World Cupper Tina Weirather.
    The top American was Kiley Staples, 1.18 back in eighth. Leanne Smith was 36th, Megan McJames 42nd, Lyndee Janowiak 45th, Hannah Victory 48th and Katie Hartman 57th. Marie-Michele Gagnon (26th) and Larisa Yurkiw (28th) paced the Canadians.
    Competition begins Tuesday with the men’s downhill, while the women are set for more downhill training. Wednesday, the women race downhill.
