Cochran-Siegle 3rd, bested by Jocher, Baumann in men’s SG
Once again the 2020 U.S. Alpine National Championships featured an international field with German national team athletes finishing in the top 10 at Friday’s men’s super G at Copper Mountain. Simon Jocher, the 24-year-old German skier took the national title Friday, followed by his teammate Romed Baumann, who captured the downhill title Thursday. Ryan Cochran-Siegle of the U.S. Ski Team landed in third, 0.54 off the leader.
Jocher has been a competitive Europa Cup speed skier the past two years. He made his World Cup debut March 2020 at Kvitfjell, Norway, finishing 33rd in the downhill. This year, he joins the German national A Team.
The German team has been training besides the U.S. Ski Team since they arrived at Copper the first week of November. Former U.S. speed team coach Andy Evers leads the German team in Copper after having experienced the world-class speed venue years prior.
Today’s conditions required skiers to keep up with the tempo and make quick adjustments. The snow was fast and had little bumps left from the downhill track the day prior.
Cochran-Sielge led the way for the American skiers with Middlebury athlete Erik Arvidsson in a close fourth, just 0.09 seconds behind Cochran-Seigle. Rounding out the top 10 for the Americans was U.S. athletes River Radamus, Tommy Ford, and Sam Morse.
It was final competition for the men’s speed team before World Cup races in Val d’Isere next month.
