GMVS adds World Cup racer Robby Kelley, coaching veteran Lorant Gudasz to 21-22 staff

Two new staff members join GMVS this season, adding World Cup talent, national team experience, and athletic acumen to the team. Robby Kelley, former World Cup racer and recent graduate of Castleton University, will join the U19 coaching staff, and also teach studio art, while Lorant Gudasz, a 15-year coaching veteran has been named the GMVS Ski Club Director, and will support GMVS student-athletes as the Director of High-Performance Conditioning.

Kelley grew up in Starksboro, Vermont and attended the University of Vermont for two years prior to being named to the U.S. Ski Team in 2011. He started in 40 WorldCup races from 2012-2018, representing the U.S. in both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships, and earning the title of U.S. national giant slalom champion in 2012. He completed his studies at Castleton University where he took his athleticism to the field as a wide receiver on the football team and competed on the alpine ski team. He was an accomplished three-time USCSA alpine national champion. With impressive athletic performances under his belt, Robby graduated from Castleton University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art.

“I’m really excited to be joining the talented and passionate staff at GMVS,” notes Kelley. “The campus, facilities, and training venue are unrivaled by any academy in the U.S. and I’m looking forward to using both my experience as a World Cup racer and as a Studio Art major to impart some wisdom and instill passion in the GMVS student-athletes.”

Kelley is joined by Lorant Gudasz, a Romanian native, who brings more than 15 years of coaching experience and international prestige. Gudasz’s coaching career began in 1996 during college in Romania when he was invited to run on snow sessions at the National University of Physical Education & Sports in Bucharest where he also pursued a degree in Physical Education and Sports. Lorant went on to compete nationally and eventually internationally, as a junior on the Romanian National Ski Team.

Gudasz comes to GMVS most recently from Mount Mansfield Ski Club and Academy with experience as the Head of Strength and Conditioning, and alpine coach. With extensive knowledge of ski racing and athlete development, Gudasz is dedicated to fostering individual development while pursuing competitive success and cultivating sportsmanship and team spirit. He says, “I am looking forward to having the opportunity to be part of such a strong community and diverse, knowledgeable coaching staff.”

After nearly 30 years at the helm of the GMVS Ski Club, Adam Julius has found that his passion, energy, and enthusiasm lies in working directly with aspiring young athletes as they discover their love for sport. Athlete-centric and fun-loving at heart, Adam truly believes that sports cultivate a spirit of adventure, foster independence, and challenge us to become better versions of ourselves. There are few more passionate about working with young athletes, nor more skilled in inspiring young ski racers to careen down challenging terrain with confident abandon.

After serving as the Ski Club Director for many years, Adam has decided to focus hisprimary efforts and energy on coaching and building up the community he knows and loves. In his new role as the Assistant Ski Club Director for Community Relations, Adam will be able to concentrate on his U14 coaching duties at GMVS, while also leading the Ski Club community building initiatives we’ve contemplated for many years.

Head of School, Tracy Keller reflects on Adam’s tenure, “For over 30 years, Adam has inspired racers to have fun and improve their skills in and out of the gates. He has established the GMVS Ski Club as one of the country’s most successful junior programs, and he has been an integral contributor to transforming the Kelly Brush Training and Race Arena into a world class facility. We are thankful for Adam’s dedication to GMVS, and we are thrilled that he will continue to be an integral part of our community.”
