Maximilian Lahnsteiner sustained a serious knee injury on Oct. 20. The Austrian speed and GS specialist was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. This was caused by a training crash in which he caught an edge and launched off a roll. The 2020-21 overall European Cup winner will be out for the entirety of this season, as his knee requires surgery to repair the damage.

European Cup winners earn a fixed start position on the World Cup the season after they win their title. Lahnsteiner would have benefitted from this, especially as a fairly new face on the World Cup circuit. He has only started one World Cup, which was a downhill in Austria last March. He finished in 30th place, earning one World Cup point. Unfortunately, the 25 year old Austrian will have to wait for his next appearance on the World Cup, as he is still awaiting surgery and will need to use this season to recover.
