Hirscher leads at Schladming mid-point

The flares were smokin’, the wet snow fallin’, the flags a wavin’ at Schladming for the annual Night Race. The straddle controversy that reach a crescendo at Kitzbuehel 48 hours prior was more or less quelled. And Marcel Hirscher put down a first run attack that left him three quarters of a second ahead of the field.

Running in bib one and first out of the gate was certainly an advantage in the soft, slushy snow that has become common on the World Cup this season, but Hirscher was in a league of his own and should be all but unstoppable on his way to his sixth win of the season. An active crowd of 45,000 is lining the Planai course.

Austrian teammate Mario Matt sits second and German Fritz Dopfer third as they await the start of the second run.

Last season’s overall champion Ivica Kostelic, having played a significant role in Straddlegate, is sixth more than a second back of Hirscher’s time. Ted Ligety will be the only American to make a second run and will come from the eighth place finish 1.31 out. Will Brandenburg was recorded as finishing 22nd but an obvious straddle is likely to disqualify him.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
