Swiss crystal globe winner Mauro Caviezel tears Achilles

While training in the gym for the upcoming 2020-21 season, super G crystal globe winner Mauro Caviezel tore his left Achilles tendon. He is expected to undergo surgery next week.

“Mauro injured himself without any opposing influence,” says his condition coach Tom Jäger told the Swiss outlet, BLICK. “It was a classic misstep that led to this injury.”

For Caviezel, this means missing out on upcoming on-snow training for Swiss athletes in Zermatt, but fortunately, a surgery of this kind tends to allow a return to sport after five months of recovery. According to BLICK, both Aksel Lund Svindal and Beat Feuz have shown that even quicker returns can be made after this kind of injury. Both athletes executed remarkable finishes after a recovery period of four months.

Caviezel is no stranger to injury. In 2011, he spent months in a wheelchair after injuring both his knee and his shoulder. At 31-years-old, the Swiss speed champion remains optimistic that he will once again return to snow strong prior to the 2020-21 season.

“This injury heals again, and I will do everything I can to get back in shape as quickly as possible,” Caviezel reported to BLICK.
