The NCAA skiing championships came to a close following the Nordic Freestyle in New Hampshire. Following an outstanding performance across four days of alpine and Nordic racing, The University of Utah took home the 2021 NCAA championship title.

Leading up to the Nordic Freestyle, Utah had a leading overall advantage over Colorado by 9.5 points. Following Utah’s Sydney Palmer-Leger taking the women’s 15K freestyle win, Utah prevailed to the top.

When the NESCAC and Ivy Leagues canceled all winter sports, it took Middlebury out of the picture to host the originally intended NCAA championships. UNH quickly stepped in to host this year’s finals, with alpine events at Mittersill and Nordic events at Jackson. Gathering the teams, under state, local, school and NCAA Covid protocols were closely monitored. Athletes were all tested before leaving home, then again before the first practice and will be tested every other day throughout the competition.

Utah had a strong showing across the four days of racing. While DU won the slalom yesterday, Utah’s Nordic team pulled through and expanded Utah’s lead after a strong performance from the alpine team. Colorado’s Magnus Boee came in first in the men’s 20k freestyle, solidifying Colorado’s second-place overall, 31.5 points behind Utah. Amelia Smart helped Denver’s overall position after taking home the slalom title yesterday, rounding out the team standings in third.

NCAA skiing has concluded its season as athletes return to the World Cup and domestic races for the remainder of 2020-21.
