It was a difficult week in Kitzbuehel for the young Canadian men’s speed team but ended on positive note.

Jack Crawford, of Toronto, landed his first career top 10 charging from a higher start position to finish six at the famed Kitzbuehel super-G Monday.

Crawford’s breakout result – coupled with the emergence of Jeff Read (18th) and the surprising return of Brodie Seger (21st) – gives the young Canadian team confidence before moving on to the next tour stop.

“Today was simple … I executed my plan and tried to have no expectations,” Crawford reported to Alpine Canada after the race. “This is the first time all the boys have been in the top 30 together and it has to be the best day for us as a team.”

Seger returned earlier than expected after a horrific crash in Val d’sere, France, in late December, and was aggressive in his approach to a return.

“For me, today was all about bringing an aggressive attitude and [mental strength] after being out of the game for a while,” said Seger, of North Vancouver. “I’m happy with the way I attacked despite a few mistakes, but most of all I’m stoked about our performance as a team. It’s about time we all punched into the points!”

Jeff Read, who punched his first top 20 today on one of the toughest super-G tracks on the tour, was inspired by Crawford’s run.

Jeffrey Read (CAN).

“I was curious how Jack was going to run the first two crucial left footers, so I actually watched his run on TV,” the Banff skier said to Alpine Canada. “I was really inspired by how solid he looked and tried to ski with similar tactics. I was really happy with how I skied today.”

The event at Kitzbuehel was a challenge for the Canadians throughout the week, with wind and degrading snow forcing delays and postponements.

The men’s World Cup continues next with three slaloms: a night race in Schladming, Austria, on Tuesday and two events in Chamonix, France, this weekend.
