A super G run Gut enough to beat Vonn
What SkiRacing.com dubbed “The Battle of the Blondes” is still going strong more than halfway through the World Cup season. On Sunday in Garmisch, Germany, Lara Gut made her latest attack, taking the super G win after a disappointing 14th-place finish in the previous day’s downhill.
“Yesterday, I wasn’t really skiing,” Gut explained. “I wasn’t doing what I can. Today, I just go – less thinking and more skiing and yeah, it was the answer.”
Lindsey Vonn, the current overall points leader, came down 0.23 seconds behind Gut after getting caught on the inside ski and making an impressive recovery. Vonn said that she did not go all out today on the soft, spring-like conditions and was not surprised when she came down behind her biggest rival, who did risk it all.
“I was hoping for a little bit more today, but like I said, I’m still really happy and he’s (Vonn’s father) still proud of me and my dog still loves me. So all-in-all, I think I’m doing pretty good,” Vonn commented.
The results hold Vonn in the overall lead by fewer than 100 points over Gut. Squeezing her way between the Swiss and the American on the podium was Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg, coming in second in front of her home crowd.
“It’s so cool,” Rebensburg said. “Being on the podium two times in a row in Garmisch here, home crowd. It was unbelievable. The crowd, they were cheering so loud for us and yeah, it was just a nice atmosphere. I’m really thankful, and I’m really enjoying this moment now.”
Like Saturday’s downhill, the light stayed flat and the course got bumpy, a gnarly combination for many of the athletes like Switzerland’s Corinne Suter, who did a violent front flip through a gate panel. She was able to walk off the course with assistance but was later diagnosed with a left thigh contusion and a mild concussion. It is questionable whether she will be able to start next week in Crans Montana. The crashes on course increased as the day went on. Of the last 20 athletes to start, 11 did not finish including American Jacqueline Wiles.
For the U.S. Ski Team, it was a bitter day with only one athlete aside from Vonn making the top 30. Laurenne Ross finished in 10th place – her best super G finish since 2013 when she was ninth on the same hill. Stacey Cook skied to just outside the top 30, landing in 31st. Four other Americans (Breezy Johnson, Alice McKennis, Anna Marno, and Abby Ghent) also finished outside the points.
The women have a three-day break before the next series in Crans Montana, Switzerland, where the speed and technical teams will come together for downhill, alpine combined, and slalom races. The action starts with a downhill training run on Feb. 11, 2016.
