Behind the scenes of World Cup course setting

Fans, you’re just about three weeks away from the World Cup opener at Soelden. Before you get to watch athletes charge down the Rettenbach Glacier, dozens of people are hard at work, preparing the venue up until the moment athletes push out of the start.

People like the chief race directors start their race days “going up when it’s still dark and coming down with the first sunshine,” said Andreas Kroenner, technical operations manager of the women’s alpine World Cup, at Soelden last year. Their day only ends after the slope is prepared for the second day of racing. The long days are used to ensure slope conditions are safe and the course is up to FIS standards.

This FIS video from 2015 goes behind the scenes to show you what happens before the racers hit the slopes.
