Riding immediately on the heels of the U.S. Alpine Championships at Sugarloaf, Maine, another national championship series rolled into the resort town to take over the venue. The top-performing U16 skiers from around the country converged on Narrow Gauge to test their skills on the same trail where their senior idols raced just days prior.

In the men’s super G on Wednesday, Vail’s Colby Lange kicked off a two-day podium streak with his teammate Bridger Gile by taking the win as Gile finished second. Chauncey Morgan of GMVS and Aspen’s Dexter Edelman rounded out the podium in a tie for third.

Select U14 athletes also had the opportunity to participate and compete against their older peers, and Jackson Hole’s Peyton Brones took home top honors for his age class in the SG, followed by Stratton Mountain School’s Jack Cobb and Burke Mountain Academy’s Patrick Coughlin in second and third, respectively.

In Thursday’s giant slalom race for the men, Gile got the better of Lange to win the race and relegate his teammate to second. Waterville Valley’s Hunter Brayton completed the podium in third.

A speedy Reed Wilson of Franconia Ski Club topped the results for U14s ahead of Vail’s Axel Bailey in second and Brones in third, his second podium finish in as many days.

Vail’s Nellie Rose Talbot cruised to the win in the ladies’ super G with a 1.17-second lead over Alix Wilkinson of the National Training Group (NTG). Wilkinson’s NTG teammate Jennie Symons finished a close third, just two hundredths back.

Kaitlyn Harsch of Vail was the fastest U14 on the day ahead of Sun Valley’s Lily Fitzgerald and Vail’s Ainsley Proffit who finished second and third, respectively.

A high attrition rate in the opening run of the ladies’ GS claimed 20 skiers who failed to complete the course on Thursday morning. Samantha McClellan of GMVS rallied for the two-run win at 0.25 seconds faster than Symons, who collected her second podium in as many days. Big Sky’s Alexa Coyle rounded out the podium in third.

Harsch was once again the speediest of the U14s, this time besting Vail’s Allie Resnick and once again leading Fitzgerald who finished third. Izzy Jenne of Killington Mountain School was a close fourth in both the SG and the GS.

The U16 National Championships conclude at Sugarloaf on Friday with the men’s and women’s slalom races.
