Vonn leads in Are, Shiffrin skips GS after crash in warmup

The competitive conditions for the FIS Alpine Women’s World Cup giant slalom in Are, Sweden, changed before a single athlete pushed out of the starting gate for the first run on Saturday.

U.S. Ski Team standout Mikaela Shiffrin pulled out of the race with a possible right knee injury sustained during the morning warmup. While freeskiing on the race slope prior to the start, Shiffrin fell and slid into the protective netting. She was taken to the hospital in Oestersund for further evaluation, and official details will be released pending an MRI this afternoon.

Mother Nature had alternative plans for the day as well. High winds forced race officials to push the start down to the reserve location – eliminating several gates from the course – as well as causing a 15-minute delay.

Things didn’t bode well for the home team early on when Sara Hector, bib 1, was taken off the hill in a sled after appearing to tweak her left knee and skiing off the course. However, teammate Frida Hansdotter was able to capitalize on the home field advantage to move into second place – sitting 0.33 seconds behind the U.S. Ski Team’s Lindsey Vonn. From start position 16, Vonn skied a fast and clean run to cross the finish line with the lead as she threw her fist into the air.

“I’m really happy with my first run,” Vonn, who won the 2012 Are World Cup, told reporters in the finish area. “I have a lot of confidence coming into this race from Lake Louise. I just gave it everything I had. I tried to arc, and I’m happy that I was fast.”

Austrian Eva-Maria Brem is 0.35 off of Vonn in third place, and GS leader Frederica Brignone of Italy sits sixth – 0.69 from the top spot.
