Vonn taken down in sled as Brignone wins Soldeu super G

The small country of Andorra looked like a winter wonderland on Saturday morning with large snowflakes falling all around – something that most of Europe has not seen much of the season. Those beautiful conditions made for a complicated super G race in Soldeu including a three-hour start delay in order to clear the course of fresh snow and work around the television broadcast of the men’s race.

Federica Brignone took advantage of her early start to put down the fastest time of the day, winning her first World Cup super G race by 0.13 seconds. She was chased by the U.S. Ski Team’s Laurenne Ross, who matched her career-best finish of second place and earned her first super G podium finish.

“I mean, it’s an outdoor sport,” Ross said. It’s very rarely perfectly fair, but yeah, it started snowing pretty hard in the middle of the race and that definitely created some slow surfaces for the girls behind. But I mean, that’s ski racing and if you’re on the good side of it, you have to take advantage of it. And if you’re on the bad side, then just hope for the best next time.”

Her teammate, Lindsey Vonn, was on the bad side of things today. After leading in the first two intervals, the American crashed more than halfway down the course after pinching her line and getting caught in the back seat on her inside ski. Medical staff attended to her on the hill and she was taken down in a sled with a stabilizer on her left knee.

In an Instagram post, Vonn shared that x-rays revealed a hairline fracture in her left knee. She will have an MRI on Monday to determine if there is any further damage. In the mean time, she is going to wait and see how she feels on Sunday before determining if she will race in the alpine combined.

Austria’s Tamara Tippler followed in the footsteps of Brignone and Ross, and was able to finish in third place, securing her second super G podium of the season.

“I can’t believe it, but in the start I said, ‘You have to push and give the best’ and so the third place is very good,” the Austrian noted.

Vonn’s biggest rival, Lara Gut, was held in the start gate while Vonn was taken off the hill. When Gut was eventually able to ski the course, she landed in 16th place, earning 15 World Cup points and shrinking Vonn’s lead in the battle for the overall title. They are now just eight points apart.

Americans Stacey Cook and Mikaela Shiffrin found their way into the top 30, finishing in 24th and 29th respectively. Their teammates, Anna Marno, Jacqueline Wiles and Abby Ghent, all finished outside of the top 30.
