LYME, N.H. – With a dominant performance by the women’s team, Dartmouth took the lead in the alpine races at its home carnival this weekend at the Dartmouth Skiway after the first two of four races were contested. The Big Green posted 243 points on the alpine slopes in the bitter cold, edging out Vermont (232) for the top spot on Friday.

The results of the Nordic races were delayed due to technical issues, but Vermont leads the overall team results 458 points to Dartmouth’s 432. New Hampshire is currently third with 381 points.

No less than six Dartmouth skiers claimed the top seven times in the women’s giant slalom, taking full advantage of the home snow on Wordens. The fantastic freshman duo of Libby Gibson and Foreste Peterson finished one-two in the standings with Gibson winning her first NCAA. Peterson was one of the three fastest on both runs as well, besting Vermont’s Elli Terwiel by 0.16 seconds to claim second place.

But the Big Green women weren’t done as a quartet swept the next four spots, led by junior Lizzie Kistler in fourth place, Canadian freshman Kelly Moore and senior Abby Fucigna tying for fifth, and junior Maisie Ide tying for seventh with Catamount Laurence St. Germain. While only the first three skiers from a school contribute to the team’s score, the Dartmouth women combined for 138 points, easily surpassing Vermont’s 110.

The men’s alpine squad also notched a pair of solid performances with freshmen Kevyn Read finishing fourth and Brian McLaughlin in sixth. Vermont freshman Griffin Brown won his first NCAA race by taking the men’s giant slalom win ahead of Middlebury’s Rob Cone. Catamount freshman Sandy Vietze picked up his first EISA podium result by finishing third.

Also scoring for Dartmouth was junior Sam Macomber in 13th, helping Dartmouth edge past Vermont in the alpine results.

The Dartmouth Carnival concludes on Saturday with the slalom starting at 9 a.m. and the 10K freestyle at 9:30 a.m.
