The U.S. Alpine National Championship downhill was held today (Feb. 16) in Aspen, Colo.  Canadian Dustin Cook, coming off of yesterday’s NorAm downhill win, won today’s tight race with a time of 1:12.40. The U.S. Ski Team’s Will Gregorak came in second just two hundredths of a second behind in second.  Teammate Erik Fisher grabbed the bronze today, just one hundredth of a second behind Gregorak finishing with a time of 1:12.43.

Today marks Gregorak’s first ever U.S. National Championship podium while Fisher grabs his third.

“The more you shorten the course the tighter it’s going to be,” said Gregorak, who earned his first Audi FIS Alpine World Cup start earlier this season. “We’ve had four runs on this course already and I’ve struggled on the difficult section. Finally I got it together through there and skied really well.”

The fastest junior of the day was U.S. Ski Team’s Brennan Rubie finishing in 12th place overall, coming down with a time of 1:13.29. Teammate Jared Goldberg was the second fastest junior finishing in 17th place.

On the women’s side, U.S. Ski Team’s Julia Ford smoked the field again today with a time of 1:14.15, beating the field by almost nine tenths of a second. Ford won yesterday’s NorAm downhill while also clinching the NorAm downhill title for the season. Today marks Ford’s first ever U.S. National Championship win, as well as her first career podium.

“When we first got up there to inspect the wind was blowing really hard, so I kind of guessed that it was going to be moved down,” said Ford, a three-time winner of the Eastern Ski Associations Golden Ski Award for top juniors. “If they didn’t move it down we would have went flying off the second jump.”

Teammate Kiley Staples finished in second place today crossing the finish with a time of 1:15.03.

Abby Ghent from the U.S. Ski Team grabbed the bronze with a time of 1:15.37, and was also the fastest junior down the mountain. Lauren Samuels was the second fastest junior today while placing fourth overall, just missing the podium.

NorAm racing will resume tomorrow (February 17) with a men’s super-G and a men’s super combined. The rest of the events for the U.S. Alpine National Championships will resume in Winter Park, Colo. starting March. 31 with the men’s giant slalom race.
