Nordic Combined: Watabe takes Win in Germany
Japan’s Akito Watabe won today’s (Feb. 18) World Cup Nordic Combined in Klingenthal, Germany. France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis finished second and is still in the lead for the overall rankings, one hundred and fifty points ahead of Watabe. Austrian Bernhard Gruber came in third.
“I am behind 150 points in the overall… if I can beat Jason I will be happy. There are still many races to race and I will try.” Said Watabe.
When asked about overall standings Chappuis replied, “No, I’m not nervous looking at the overall’s standing. But for sure it will be a close race until the end of the season.”
German Tino Edelmann was disqualified during the Ski Jumping portion because he did not jump while the start light was on green. Italy’s Alessandro Pittin did not compete after suffering a shoulder injury from a severe fall during Friday’s training session; he will undergo surgery and be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Bryan Fletcher led the U.S. finishing in seventeenth place. Johnny Spillane jumped to eleventh, but fell to finish thirtieth after battling to make up a minute and thirty-three second gap.
The men’s World Cup Nordic Combined will continue tomorrow (Feb. 13) with another individual Gundersen, in Klingenthal.
