Norway Announces “Culture Program”

Norway’s Ski Federation has ambitions to become the world’s best at alpine skiing. When Norway’s small-punch nation competes against the great powers of Austria and Switzerland, the connection must be better at all levels. This includes, among other things, identity, following the rules, values, behavior, and how coaches, other staff, and managers treat each other.

The federation has recently announced plans for a new “Culture Program” aimed at building a strong alpine culture at all ages and ability levels.

“We will have a continuous focus on improvement in all aspects,” said Norwegian Sport Director Claus Johan Ryste. “We started work during the Hafjell national championships this winter, but this is a long-term process. The goal is to get input on the process of building culture as we wish to have it in the alpine family.”

The basic values of the Norwegian Ski Federation and “Attacking Vikings” will also be implemented in the Program.

“It’s natural that we start the process at skiing lessons, which is an important resource,” said Stefan Havnelid Johnsen, Senior Vice President and Senior Officer. “Eventually, we will anchor the program with the rest of Norway at both the racing circuit and the clubs.”

The alpine committee has developed a set of values that will guide the work as well as the culture that is to be adopted by the alpine family. In addition, the alpine administration is tasked with developing a process of how the work within the administration will be conducted and how the “Culture Program” can support that value and culture.

There will be a number of meeting activities throughout the autumn in order to present a draft of common guidelines at the federation seminar in October.
