Read Takes NorAm Overall, Brandenburg Wins Slalom Title

By Published On: March 24th, 2012Comments Off on Read Takes NorAm Overall, Brandenburg Wins Slalom Title

The men’s NorAm Cup overall and slalom titles were determined today (Mar. 24) after the final NorAm Cup slalom in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec.

Canadian Michael Janyk took the slalom win today with a combined time of 1:35.98. Colby Granstrom led the U.S. and finished second, .06 seconds off of Janyk. Fellow American Michael Ankeny rounded out the podium in third. American Tim Kelley of the University of Vermont took fourth.

Norway’s Espen Lysdahl who skis for the University of Denver placed fifth ahead of Americans Matthew Strand and Ryan Cochran-Siegle who ended up in sixth and seventh, respectively. Other Canadians in the top ten were Trevor White in eighth and Sasha Zaitsoff in ninth. U.S. Skier Robert Cone took tenth.

Despite making the decision to head home in preparation for U.S. Nationals at Winter Park next week, and missing the NorAm finals, American Will Brandenburg clinched the men’s NorAm Cup slalom title with a thirty-point advantage.

“I’ve never really been awarded on consistency which is what a NorAm title really is.” said Brandenburg, “I’m stoked on it, and I’m stoked to have a World Cup spot for the nation next season.” Brandenburg plans to finish out the season next week in Winter Park with the men’s slalom and super G races at U.S. Nationals.”

After Norway’s Jonathan Nordbotten of the University of Vermont took first in this morning’s first run of slalom it appeared as though he would take the title, but Nordbotten did not finish his second run and placed second in the slalom season standings, thirty points behind Brandenburg. Canadian Trevor Philp of the University of Denver snagged the third spot in the overall slalom rankings.

Canada’s Erik Read took his first NorAm Cup overall title, just ten points ahead of American downhill and super G title winner Ryan Cochran-Siegle who landed second overall. Read also holds the men’s super combined title for the season as well. Philp also ended the season in third place overall.
