Vonn unlikely to race Aspen
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. — Lindsey Vonn downplayed reports Friday that she is considering making a start in the World Cup tech events in Aspen Nov. 29-30.
“I said that I’m leaving everything open, but it is not likely that I will be racing in Aspen,” Vonn said in an interview with Ski Racing. “Like I said, I leave every option open until the last minute until I need to make a final decision. But you never know how things are going to be going in three weeks, so we’ll see but definitely not anticipating that as of right now.”
Vonn has been training tech on limited hill space along with the rest of the U.S. Ski Team at Copper Mountain, Colo. She’s been surprised by how well her giant slalom training has been going, which is partially what provoked her to tell the Associated Press earlier this week that she was considering a start in Aspen.
“It’s discouraging that we don’t have as much snow as we usually do this time of year in Colorado. At the same time, I’m getting good technical training in. That’s definitely going to improve my speed skiing as well. … To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting GS to be coming along as quickly as it has. I obviously need to ski on different snow conditions, some injections and see where I stand. If things continue to go as they are, I think I need to reconsider my schedule for the season.”
Lake Louise, often dubbed “Lake Lindsey” and considered a more moderate speed track, is where Vonn has logged 14 wins over her career. In 2012, prior to her injury, Vonn swept the weekend, winning both downhills and the super G.
“My knee has been doing really well. Training has been going extremely well. I don’t have any pain or swelling,” said Vonn. “It’s definitely a lot better than I had anticipated, and my goal is still to start racing in Lake Louise.”
