FORMER SKI RACING magazine editor and publisher Donald A. Metivier, 70, passed away Friday, April 6, at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, New York.
Metivier was a veteran journalist and former president of the United States Ski Writers Association when he was named the magazine’s new editor and publisher for the April 3, 1981, edition. His byline had appeared in the first issue of Ski Racing in 1968, as he was an Eastern correspondent for the magazine under founder William Tanler.
Ski Racing was later purchased by Edward G. Pickett in 1977 and moved to Vermont, where Metivier was named executive editor.
“Don Metivier was a great friend of skiing and ski sport,” said Gary Black, CEO of Ski Racing International, which publishes the modern Ski Racing magazine and administers www.skiracing.com. “To me, he was both a teacher and helper. As publisher of Ski Racing when I purchased the company in 1984, Don taught me about the sport, USSA and the U.S. Ski Team. He was charming, considerate and a delightful person to be around. All of us at Ski Racing who had the opportunity to work with Don, will miss him.”
Metivier was a native of Glens Falls and held journalism degrees from Rider College and Boston University. He was a longtime member of the editorial staff of the Glens Falls Post-Star.
Arrangements are pending with Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, N.Y.
A tribute article will appear in the April 30 edition of Ski Racing magazine.
