Season Opener

Both the men’s and women’s 2024/25 Alpine World Cup seasons kick off with the traditional giant slalom (GS) races in Sölden, Austria, during the last weekend of October. This event sets the tone for an exciting season ahead.

Early Season Challenges

After Sölden, both the men and women head to the Arctic Circle for slalom races in Levi, Finland, followed by more slalom action in Gürgl, Austria. These early races will test the racers’ technical skills and resilience.

Women Head to North America

The women then cross the Atlantic to North America for a series of high-profile races. They start with a GS/slalom weekend in Killington, Vermont, known for attracting the biggest crowds of the women’s season. Following Killington, the women compete in two GS races in Tremblant, Quebec. Before they race their first speed event, they will have raced three GSs and three slaloms.

Speed Races in Beaver Creek

The first speed races of the year for the women take place at the iconic Birds of Prey venue in Beaver Creek, Colorado. It will be the first time the women have raced at the Birds of Prey. This event is highly anticipated as it marks speed queen Sofia Goggia’s return from injury and features hometown hero Mikaela Shiffrin in the super-G. Shiffrin’s participation is expected to draw record-breaking crowds.

Central European Circuit

After Beaver Creek, the women’s tour continues with 15 races in Central Europe before the February break for the World Championships. Highlights include two thrilling night slalom races in Flachau, Austria, and then Courchevel, France, just before the World Championship break.

Post-World Championships

Following the World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, the women resume racing in Sestriere, Italy. They then head to Scandinavia for a series that includes a downhill, super-G in Kvitfjell, Norway, then a GS and slalom in Åre, Sweden. The regular season wraps up with a speed series in La Thuile, Italy, before concluding with the World Cup finals.

Women’s Season Finale

For the best of the season, the women’s 2024/25 Alpine World Cup season concludes in Sun Valley, Idaho, with the World Cup finals. This new venue is expected to draw significant crowds, especially with Mikaela Shiffrin competing in multiple events. The excitement is palpable as the world’s best female skiers compete on a new speed track built specifically for this prestigious event. With the addition of Beaver Creek and Sun Valley, the women’s tour includes nine races in North America, seven of which are in the USA, making this season particularly notable for American fans

Men’s Season Highlights

The men follow a familiar path after the Gürgl slalom, beginning their traditional schedule with a downhill and super-G in Beaver Creek. However, this season, the GS returns to Beaver Creek for the first time since December 2019, when Tommy Ford secured the last men’s US World Cup GS victory.

Central European Circuit for Men

After Beaver Creek, the men’s tour continues with the traditional Central European races. However, this year, the Madonna di Campiglio night slalom is scheduled after the New Year. The men will also compete in two additional exciting night races, during the January Schladming GS and slalom, considered among the very best spectator events in the sport.

Men’s Season Finale

Following the World Championships, the men will have speed test races on the 2027 World Championship courses with a World Cup downhill and super-G in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Then, before heading back to North America, they will swing through Scandinavia, competing in downhill and super-G in Kvitfjell, Norway, and a GS and slalom in Hafjell.

Like the women, the men’s season also ends in Sun Valley, Idaho. This finale includes all four events: downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. The new speed track in Sun Valley promises to be an exhilarating conclusion to the season. With the finals, the men will have seven World Cup races in the USA this season, an increase of one from the previous year. This boost in North American races highlights the growing prominence and excitement of the sport in the United States, providing domestic fans with more opportunities to witness world-class skiing firsthand.

Conclusion

The addition of Sun Valley as a new venue for the World Cup finals signifies a thrilling end to the 2024/25 Alpine World Cup season. With massive crowds anticipated and new challenges on freshly constructed tracks, the season promises to conclude with high drama and unforgettable performances from the world’s best skiers.
