Wind and snow cancel women’s World Cup Super G in St. Moritz

Dec 11, 2010

It was stop and go traffic at the women’s World Cup super G in St. Moritz, Switzerland today (Dec. 11).

After wind and snow forced organizers to delayed the start for an hour, the second racer down the course, Slovenia’s Marusa Ferk, took a tough, high-speed crash after sailing off a mid-course jump. After being checked out by coaches and medical staff, she skied down under her own power.

After two more racers failed to navigate the same difficult, mid-course jump in the hazy conditions, officials put the breaks on yet again. Following the 20-minute wind hold, the race was officially canceled.

“It was a combination of weather and safety because the course turned out to be faster than they expected,” said U.S. alpine women’s head coach Alex Hoedlmoser. “We knew [it was a difficult set] from inspection and the people that missed the gate or fell, just didn’t do the right things. We were all fired up to rip this thing up but unfortunately we couldn’t.”

The race was rescheduled to run in Val d’Isere, France Dec. 17.

Yesterday’s free skiing session on the hill was also canceled by fog, snow and wind.

World Cup competition in St. Moritz continues tomorrow with a giant slalom. The first run is scheduled to start at 10:15 am CET with the second run slated for 1:15 pm. Initial weather forecasts for tomorrow’s race are good.
