steven nymanAndrej Jerman, the winner of the Bormio downhill at the end of December, edged Austria’s Klaus Kroell during the second test run for the Lauberhorn at Wengen, Switzerland. Italian Peter Fill was third .63 of a second off the pace.

American skiers again had a strong, but unspectacular showing. Steven Nyman finished ninth, Bode Miller in a tie for 13th, Andrew Weibrecht was 15th and Marco Sullivan 18th. Erik Fisher posted the 23rd fastest time on the day and Scott Macartney 38th. Ted Ligety also skied in the downhill training finishing 42nd where he was tied with Canadian Jan Hudec.

The Canadian results were not strong. Manuel Osborne-Paradis, with two DH wins for the season, finished the trainer in 30th and Erik Guay was 31st. Hudec was the next best. Tyler Nella finished 46th just after U.S. skier Travis Ganong, making his second Cup start.

Nyman said he was pleased with the outcome and was hopeful for downhill race of Saturday. “I thought I skied well in a lot of sections and then some sections I definitely can make up a lot of time. … which is cool because I’m not that far out.”

He said he was feeling “healthier and healthier,” after missing the entire summer preparation period due to surgery. He’s been able to “…put more miles on (and) feel more and more confident. … I’m really pleased with the way things are going. Hopefully I can keep it up and make the Olympics.”

Racing starts Friday with a combined. It is the 80th running of the Lauberhornrennen at Wengen.
