Bode MillerKlaus Kroell recorded the fastest time today (Dec. 28), by more than half a second, in the second training run at Bormio, Italy ahead of a World Cup downhill set for tomorrow. Kroell beat Austrian teammate Mario Scheiber with third going to Swiss Didier Cuche. In fourth was American Bode Miller on a track (Stelvio) on which he has won both World Cup and World Championship downhills.

Canada had Robbie Dixon in sixth. Steven Nyman posted 19th for the U.S. Both Canada and the U.S. had some bad luck as well with Marco Sullivan, the first skier out of the start, unable to finish. The training run was held up for five to ten minutes while Canadian Louis-Pierre Helie was taken off the course after a crash. Sullivan was to be checked over as a precautionary measure, but did not appear to sustain significant injuries.

Helie crashed hard, sustaining a head injury. He was transferred to Innsbruck Hospital for examination. No further information was immediately known.

Not racing, after sustaining a dislocated left shoulder while slalom training in Hinterreit, Austria prior to Christmas, was Andrew Weibrecht. He is anticipating returning to the World Cup circuit by mid-January. Weibrecht injured his right shoulder last season requiring surgery.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
