Fenninger leads first downhill training in Zauchensee, Vonn second

Jan 06, 2011

After a three-week break from speed events, the women of the World Cup were going fast again today (Jan. 6) in Zauchensee, Austria in a downhill training run in preparation for a World Cup downhill here Saturday.

The Austrian women were looking strong at home, putting four racers in today’s top six. Anna Fenninger led the way with a time of one minute 48.60 seconds. She was followed by American Lindsey Vonn, who was a tenth of a second behind in second. Vonn hasn’t finished lower than second in any of this season’s three downhill races and won the last one three weeks ago in Val d’Isere.

Austrians Andrea Fischbacher (1:48.74), Regina Mader (1:48.96) and Elisabeth Goergl (1:49.22) packed the top six in third fourth and sixth, respectively.

Lara Gut, fresh off her two-race suspension handed down from Swiss-Ski, hasn’t slowed down any with today’s fifth-fasest time (1:49.01). The 19-year-old Swiss star captured her first World Cup podium in two years with a third-place performance at the last downhill in Val d’Isere just before her suspension for making negative comments about her team’s head coach took effect.

American Julia Mancuso tied for today’s 11th-fastest time with Spanish racer Carolina Ruiz Castillo while teammate Laurenne Ross showed speed in 16th place.

World Cup overall leader, German Maria Riesch was 1.79 seconds off today’s leading pace tied for 18th with leading Canadian Britt Janyk.

There will be another training run tomorrow ahead of Saturday’s downhill. A super G will follow on Sunday.
