Didier CucheAn overnight snowfall brought a lowered start for the second training run for the Lauberhorn as Wengen, Switzerland prepares to host the World Cup’s first three event weekend of the season, but that didn’t stop the Swiss racers from making a statement.  On a course that still measures nearly two miles Didier Cuche bruised the field with a  .86 of a second margin and Carlo Janka finished third behind Italian Werner Heel.

Steven Nyman is beginning to like the early start numbers as he turned the third start into a fifth place finish a half second out of second place and 15 hundredths from a podium finish. Bode Miller tightened his line as well moving into 14th. Ted Ligety, intent on running the combined, posted the 47th fastest run on the day and Travis Ganong was 35th

The Canadians backed off the gas pedal as a team. Jan Hudec was the fastest in 45th, Ryan Semple placed 48th and Manny Osborne-Paradis 56th.

World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic was one of seven skiers electing not to start the training run.

The 81st Lauberhorn racing starts Friday (Jan. 14) with super combined, the downhill is Saturday and the slalom Sunday.
