LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland – Rain, snow and fog propelled Didier Cuche to the men’s super G title when officials cancelled the event at 7.00 am CET after watching the weather deteriorate. The women’s title had already been clinched by Lindsey Vonn in Tarvisio two weeks prior.
 
Mathematically six men had a shot at the title, but their chances were distant unless Cuche went out or finished out of the top fifteen. That prospect was doubtful as the Swiss ace worst finish this season was in Hinterstoder where he placed 19th.  It is his first super G title and compliments his giant slalom title and four downhill titles.

Importantly the cancellation stopped the women’s overall battle in its tracks theoretically helping Germany’s Maria Reisch as Vonn has been virtually unstoppable in the discipline, winning four and finishing second twice. It also deprived Julia Mancuso an opportunity to perhaps pass the German star after she demonstrated that she knew how to ski the Beltrametti Piste with a convincing downhill victory yesterday.

“Naturally I am disappointed,” Vonn said. “In World Cup every point counts and super G is my best event.” Also disappointed was Laurenne Ross who was due to start her first World Cup Finals race. The 23-year-old, who is in her second season on the World Cup, qualified for the finals with a breakthrough fourth place super G finish in Tarvisio two weeks ago. Leanne Smith, who was injured last season, also qualified for the final race of the season.

Tomorrow’s schedule calls for the women to race slalom and the men GS.
