U.S. Alpine Champs to return to Squaw in 2014

Apr 24, 2013

Following a successful Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships that brought thousands of fans to Squaw Valley this spring, the annual event is returning to the 1960 Olympic Mountain to close out next season season, USSA announced Tuesday.

“The Squaw Valley community has produced some of the greatest Olympic skiers in history like Julia Mancuso, Tamara McKinney and Jimmie Heuga,” said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. “That legacy helped bring out some of the biggest crowds in the history of the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships last spring. I have no doubt they will come out again to welcome home our 2014 Olympic Team from Sochi and cheer the best USSA club athletes in the country during our annual celebration of ski racing.”

The March 19-23 championships are expected to feature Julia Mancuso, Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller and Mikaela Shiffrin and serve as a celebration of the 2014 U.S. Ski Team in addition to hundreds of aspiring Olympians from club programs across the country.

“It’s great to get to race at my home mountain and it’s awesome to have Squaw’s support for ski racing,” said Mancuso. “They did an exceptional job this season, so I definitely look forward to some more great races on home snow after the Olympics.”

Squaw Valley hosted the 1960 Olympic Winter Games the 2002 U.S. Alpine Championships and the 2013 event with thousands of fans flooding Olympic Valley during the five-day championships.
