Camille Rast celebrates a premiere at the first women’s World Cup race in Gurgl: The 25-year-old Swiss athlete finished third in the Slalom on Saturday, taking to the podium for the first time in the World Cup. Previously, her best World Cup results have been three fourth place finishes in the Slalom. On Sunday, third place in the men’s Slalom in Gurgl went to HEAD Worldcup Rebel Atle Lie McGrath.
“I am very pleased with the races in Gurgl. It was another great result for the women’s team, topped by the first podium for Camille Rast. The other HEAD athletes also achieved very good results,” says HEAD Racing Director Rainer Salzgeber. “We had ten athletes competing in the men’s event and eight of them reached the second run. This shows that the equipment is performing well, and we are in a strong position. We can be very satisfied with third, seventh, eleventh and 14th place.”
“You just have to ski full throttle”
Camille Rast was in fifth place after the first run. Clocking the third fastest time on the second run, she moved up to third place overall. “It was very exciting today, but I was so nervous,” said Camille Rast at the finish. “On this new run, we didn’t really know what was good and what was bad. You just have to ski full throttle. That’s what I did, and it worked. The run is quite special, very steep, but it still allows you to take risks. It’s so cold, and this was also a criterion for selecting the right equipment. I reckon I took the right skis today.”
Wendy Holdener second on first run
With Wendy Holdener from Switzerland in fourth place, Lena Dürr from Germany fifth, and Sara Hector from Sweden eighth, a total of four HEAD Worldcup Rebels finished in the top eight. Wendy Holdener is skiing better and better after her comeback following her ankle fracture. The 31-year-old was in second place on the first run. The three Swedish athletes, Cornelia Öhlund, Anna Swenn-Larsson and Estelle Alphand also bagged World Cup points in 14th, 15th and 17th place, with Anna Swenn-Larsson clocking the second-fastest time on the second run.
Second podium of the season for Atle Lie McGrath
Atle Lie McGrath once again confirmed his top form in the Slalom on Sunday. In second place on the first run, the Norwegian athlete finished the race in third place overall to celebrate his second podium of the season. The 24-year-old also came third in the Giant Slalom in Sölden at the start of the season. “It was a good day. It was a tough slope, and I didn’t have a good feeling about either run. I’m very satisfied, it’s a good Slalom result. It’s just a shame that I missed out on second place by a hundredth of a second, just like in Sölden. Now I’m looking forward to the Super-G,” said Atle Lie McGrath.
Seven more HEAD Worldcup Rebels picked up points
Dave Ryding from Great Britain finished in seventh place. With Armand Marchant from Belgium in eleventh place and Paco Rassat from France with bib number 44 landing in 14th place, two more HEAD Worldcup Rebels reached the top 15. World Cup points also went to Albert Popov from Bulgaria in 18th place, Benjamin Ritchie from the USA in 21st place, Laurie Taylor from Great Britain in 23rd place and Tobias Kastlunger from Italy, who finished in 26th place.
