According to reports emanating Thursday (Aug. 12) from the Russian news agency RIA Novosti and reported by the Associated Press, FIS official Jan Erik Hedstrom, 50, suffered a heart attack and died in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia while working with the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee.

Hedstrom was a technical expert for the International Ski Federation and was working with the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, the report said.

According to its website: “(The) Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is deeply saddened that, after a life of tremendous contributions to skiing, Jan Erik Hedstrom passed away after suffering a heart attack early this morning.”

Hedstrom’s wife and two sons were present when he died, the report said.
