Simard gets first World Cup win at Cortina super G; Lalive 4th for U.S.{mosimage}Genevieve Simard won the first of four World Cups at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, a classic among women’s World Cup sites. It was the Canadian’s first World Cup victory.

Caroline Lalive, who has been skiing well this season despite blowing her knee out last year in Innsbruck, finished fourth.

“She doesn´t try too hard,” said women´s head coach Patrick Riml, reached via cell phone at Cortina and asked to explain Lalive´s recent comeback. “I think now she is able to just ski like she does in training.”

Lalive was the fastest on the middle section of the course, which Riml said was in excellent condition despite a snowstorm the day before the race.

The women train downhill tomorrow, a run that will be used to seed the downhill race.
