Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane are dominating the Summer Grand Prix{mosimage}Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane, both of whom hail from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, are the two hottest skiers on the nordic combined Summer Grand Prix. They teamed up this weekend to win a two-man team sprint event under sunny skies in Berchtesgaden, Germany, and have put themselves atop the standings.
“I’m wearing the yellow bib now,” Lodwick said after his win on Saturday night. “It’s nice to have it on, nice to have it stay within the team since Johnny was wearing it coming into today.
Lodwick won two individual contests after being disqualified in the opening event because of faulty equipment. He and Spillane stand 1-2 in the points after three individual events. Sunday, they topped Austria-1 (Michael Gruber and Christoph Bieler) with Norway-1 (Magnus Moen and Petter Tande) in third place. Three teams — Germany-1, Japan and Finland-1 — were disqualified when they missed the tag in the tag zone.
“It’s been going good, but we haven’t started on the hardest work yet,” coach Lasse Ottesen said. “We’ve built a good base so far and now, as we head into September and October, we have to go into the smaller details. Bard [Elden, head coach] and I are looking forward to that.”
Lodwick, Spillane and Demong will be joined by Carl Van Loan (Webster, NH), who sat out Saturday’s mass-start event in favor of newcomer Eric Camerota (Park City, UT). The Grand Prix has two individual events remaining – Aug. 27 in Harrachov, Czech Republic, and Aug. 29 in Steinbach-Hallenberg, Germany, near Oberhof.
