Snowboard World Cup underway in Chile

Snowboard World Cup underway in Chile{mosimage}Lindsey Jacobellis made her second trip to snowboardcross finals in two days, placing sixth Sunday at the World Cup in Valle Nevado, Chile. Six Americans qualified for the second SBX of the weekend, including World SBX champ Seth Wescott (Farmington, ME) who finished 11th.

After Saturday’s two podiums a win for Jacobellis, second place for Wescott U.S. Snowboarding SBX Head Coach Peter Foley said Sunday’s performances were disappointing, but ‘part of the unpredictable nature of boardercross.’ The familiarity, he said, allows riders to be more aggressive.

‘You can be riding the fastest and not win’ Foley said. ‘When you race the same course twice, it becomes more physical. There is more contact, more crashes, and we didn’t come out ahead in those crashes today.’

Austria’s Lukas Gruener won the second World Cup contest (1 SBX, 1 parallel giant slalom) of his career and sixth podium. On the women’s side, Deborah Anthonioz (FRA) took top honors for her third World Cup SBX win and eighth podium.

‘Despite today’s results, I know our athletes are riding at a very high level’ said Foley. ‘Yesterday, Seth had his best qualifying in ages he qualified second and today he was seventh. He’s already qualifying faster than he was last year.

‘We knew Lindsey was riding well, but it was super encouraging for her to come out for the first contest and get the job done. She’ll take today hard, but she’ll take responsibility for it and come back stronger.’
