When NCAAs Hit Ski Town USA

When NCAA March Madness meets Steamboat Springs, it has nothing to do with brackets — and everything to do with the state of Colorado creating a racket. Once again, the University of Denver claimed the national skiing title, marking its 23rd such overall victory and topping the team standings with 567.6 points. Just behind Denver was the University of Colorado with 491.5 points. Utah placed third, with 485 points.

But there was more madness in the way that Montana State maintained the lead through the two opening days only to be toppled on Day Three, when Pioneer Erik Read won the individual men’s slalom championship as teammates Monica Huebner and Kristine Haugen placed third and sixth, respectively, an “incredible” feat, said coach Andy Leroy.

Now, here’s a look back at more incredible moments from the men and women of the NCAA Skiing Championships.

In the slalom, broadcasters would mistakenly announce that UVM’s Laurence St. Germain had won the race as Mohagen heard “heartbreaking” Catamount cheers while crossing the finish line — in first.
