Slalom title for Gagnon, Philp on fire at Canadian Championships
CALGARY, Alberta – It’s sunny, it’s warm and the athletes continue to throw down at the 2016 Sport Chek Canadian Championships in Whistler Blackcomb in the final days of competition. The spring skiing carried on as the men laid down a giant slalom race and the ladies put together quick turns for their slalom race on Monday.
With little surprise, Quebec’s Marie-Michèle Gagnon picked up more hardware, scoring another title in the slalom. This brings the tally to 13 Canadian Championship titles for Gagnon as she continues to impress the field with her technical skiing.
“I kind of expected a messy run up there so I was prepared,” said Gagnon. “It’s spring and it’s warm outside! There’s a bit of a crust up there and I just tried to stay loose and ski the rut and I think I did a good job of that.”
Candace Crawford from Ontario skied into second place, 2.14 seconds back from Gagnon’s winning time. Making it a national team trio on the podium, Quebec’s Laurence St. Germain (also of the University of Vermont) took home third place, 3.26 seconds back.
The male athletes arced impressive turns at the Canadian Championship giant slalom race under clear skies and warm temperatures. Alberta’s Trevor Philp takes home back-to-back Canadian Championship titles after securing the giant slalom win and the previous day’s alpine combined title. Philp trailed by 0.50 seconds after the first run and looked to make up time heading into the second run.
“It wasn’t that much softer than this morning but there was a lot of the track baking in the sun,” said Philp. “The second run was also a little more technical so I felt like I made a few mistakes but I really tried to push it and overall it worked out well.”
Joining Philp on the podium was national teammate and Alberta boy, Tyler Werry, trailing by just 0.13 seconds and development team athlete Jack Crawford clinched third place, 0.39 seconds back from Philp’s time.
On Tuesday, the men and ladies swap disciplines as the ladies put down a giant slalom race and the men switch to slalom. These will be the final events in the 2016 Sport Chek Canadian Championships.
