Week 9 recap
If Fantasy ski racing had a history, the battle between the Ribbons and Rick’s Rangers would have made the short list. A seven-point winning margin for the Ribbons was looking like a loss until Renate Goetschl pulled in 12 more points in the final SG, to edge by the ill-fated Rangers, who had Goetschl on the roster, but in the DH position. The Rangers benefited from the DH win by Anja Paerson, but got stung when she didn’t score the rest of the weekend. The Ribbons countered with Rahlves’ Lauberhorn win. The Ranger had carried the lead into the last race on a 26th-place result from Martina Ertl.
The cellar-dwelling Destroyers lived up to their name for the first time this season with a 329-point total on the week, powered by Kjetil Aamodt and Michael Walchhofer doing double duty with scores in both the DH and combined, including second-place finishes from both team members. The Destroyers also tallied Ted Ligety’s slalom fifth, but didn’t really need the counters against the Hammers, who got 60 from Fritz Strobl, but saw Lindsey Kildow struggle at Bad Kleinkirchheim.
Team Schwarzenegger had both its premier skiers tally points in all three races over the weekend and maximized Alexandra Meissnitzer’s points, having her in three roster positions (overall, DH and SG). In the overall, Meissnitzer brought home 127 points, added 47 from two DH finishes and 80 for the second-place tie in SG. Throw in 87 points from Elisabeth Goergl and her three scoring results of the week, and a strong 341 total allowed the Schwarzeneggers to roll over the Birds of Pray. The Birds had two mild scores from Bode Miller, a third from Strobl and a strong showing from Hermann Maier in the DH, but also was saddled with a slalom performer and SG performer who didn’t get a chance to compete due to the schedule.
The league-leading Team PMS showed no signs of slowing down, putting up the top score of the week, and the top score of the season, with a 390 total, scoring from just two positions. The historic DH and SG wins by Janica Kostelic helped give Team PMS 250 from one overall position, and PMS added 140 from two DH podiums from Michaela Dorfmeister. That’s star power. The Weekend Warriors put up a fight for a while, with Didier Defago scoring twice and Walchhofer earning a podium, but it just wasn’t near enough to overcome that Bad K kharma.
The Interosseous Membrane – you may remember as the Bottle Rockets; or maybe the Vintonnators – Got a pair of victories from Benjamin Raich and Rahlves, and that was all she wrote for Hawk’s Harem. The Harem tried to nickle and dime with multiple smaller scores, but fell short with Julia Mancuso contributing 36, Kildow 42 and Tina Maze 40.
The Smokin’ Mirrors, glad to back into a speed portion of the schedule, rolled over the Blacks with a massive 381 score, including 220 from Dorfmeister and that fifth 100 point contribution from Giorgio Rocca. The Blacks, coming in on the back of a win streak, got solid points in four categories, including a three-race string from overall skier Marlies Schild, and a double from Hermann Maier, and the podium from Dorfmeister in SG, but the Mirrors still dispatched them.
