Croatia's Nika Fleiss injured in crash with coach
Croatia's World Cup season faces more hardship after Nika Fleiss crashed into an Austrian coach during training on the slopes of Loveland, Colorado.
The team has already lost World Cup champion Janica Kostelic, who opted not to race this season, and was banking on the 21-year-old Fleiss, the nation's second-highest-ranked alpine skier last season.
Fleiss, favoring an injury from trying to avoid a tourist during a training session in October, crashed into Bernd Brunner while giant slalom training at Loveland. She was transported to the hospital in Vail, Colorado, with a strained knee ligament.
She will now skip this weekend's races in Aspen, but is expected to return to the slopes in time for Megève's slalom in France in three weeks.
Brunner, one of tour leader Marlies Schild’s coaches, suffered mild head trauma and reportedly does not remember the accident.
