LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada — At 31 years of age, Renate Goetschl seems determined to add to her four World Cup downhill titles, ripping to the fastest time in the final training run at Lake Louise on Thursday. Italian youngster Nadia Fanchini, winner of the first of three training heats, finished second.
The American women were led by Kirsten Clark in fifth, Lindsey Kildow sixth and Stacey Cook seventh.
Wednesday, racers from way back in the pack surged to the podium, pushed by gusting winds. Today the winds were quiet, so Goetschl’s lead of .59 seconds would be challenged. Swiss skier Nadia Styger was third and Austrian Andreas Fischbacher fourth.
''I know I had some mistakes in the middle part,'' Goetschl said. ''I think it was OK. I know what I have to do for the next two days.''
The women race downhills Friday and Saturday and a super G Sunday as part of the Winterstart World Cup stop.
