Switzerland’s Kueng Announces Retirement
Swiss speed skier Patrick Kueng announced his retirement from top-level sport in Kitzbuehel, Austria, on Wednesday afternoon. The 35-year-old experienced his career highlight four years ago in 2015 when he won the downhill World Championship title in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
Kueng prevailed that day with a strong performance, finishing 0.24 seconds ahead of American Travis Ganong. Kueng’s teammate and reigning downhill World Champion, Beat Feuz, completed the podium in third. After this success in 2015, Kueng missed a season due to a patellar tendon injury. After that, he fell short of jumping back to the top of the World Cup as he desired. At his home World Championships in St. Moritz in 2017, he barely missed another World Champs medal in the downhill, finishing two-hundredths of a second off the podium..
Last week, Kueng celebrated his World Cup debut in the super combination of Wengen in mid-January 2009 but crashed in downhill training on the Lauberhorn and suffered a concussion. Kueng won the prestigious downhill five years ago. His biggest successes include a World Cup victory in December 2013 at the Super-G in Beaver Creek.
