LAKE PLACID, New York — The brother-sister duo of Olympian Anders Johnson and Alissa Johnson (both Park City, Utah) swept the men's and women's Open Class at Lake Placid's annual Chevrolet Summer Ski Jump, highlighting two days of competition during Fourth of July festivities on the 1980 Olympic hill. Both live in Utah but were born when their family lived in Lake Placid in the early 1990s.
Anders, 18 but the youngest skier ever named to a U.S. Olympic team when he qualified at 16 for the Torino Winter Games in 2006, breezed to the men's victory. He had jumps of 99.5 and 92 meters Tuesday on the normal hill, good for 249.6 points. Chris Lamb was second and Evan Bliss third. The event was staged by the Olympic Regional Development Authority.
Alissa Johnson, 20, jumped 82.5 and 88 meters for 207.5 points as she overtook first-round leader Jessica Jerome for the win. Local favorite Nina Lussi was third.
"Anders and I have never done that before, so it's cool," Alissa Johnson said. In her second season on the U.S. Ski Team, she edged teammate Jerome by 11.5 points. Jerome, returning after knee surgery last winter, jumped 86 meters for the early lead but struggled on her final jump and went 81 meters, finishing with 196.0.
"Some of the jumpers had wind and some did not. The conditions were not as good as training, but I had two good jumps," Anders Johnson said, "and they were good enough to win."
The next day, Anders Johnson repeated with another easy win while Jerome captured the women's competition with Alissa Johnson in second place.
In a competition organized by the New York Ski Education Foundation, Johnson jumped 95.5 and 91 meters to compile 244.0 points for the men's win. Blake Hughes went 89 and 85.5 meters for 212.0 with Lamb completing the podium.
The women's event saw the same pattern as the first day — the first-round leader struggled on her final jump and finished second. Jerome jumped 86 and 92 meters and had 221.0 points while Johnson went 87 and 83.5 (206.5). Third place, as it had on Tuesday, went to Lussi.
Peter Frenette won the junior competition each day.
